Mïstïk Winter Issue – December 2009
As the year comes to a close, Tree Canada is looking back on all the successful events it held with the help of sponsors, communities and people like you throughout the country. We thank you for your help in making us the largest tree organization in Canada with over 76 million trees planted since 1992. In this issue of Mïstïk, we will tell you about our successes for the fall 2009 and our upcoming programs for 2010. We thank you for your support and look forward to touching base with you in the New Year!

Getting Bigger All the Time – Maple Leaf Day a Big Success!
Eight communities declared Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009 as Maple Leaf Day – a time to reflect on the benefits that all trees, big and small, provide for our health and our communities. Tree Canada was pleased to see Toronto Mayor David Miller and Halifax Mayor Peter J. Kelly included in these declarations. See www.mapleleafday.ca for more details.
Tree Canada and Home Hardware staff planted trees in 16 communities from coast to coast. A special planting was held in Nanaimo, B.C. to mark the day during the Canadian Institute of Forestry conference.
Next year’s Maple Leaf Day takes place on September 22, 2010. Mark your calendars! |

Helping Waterways, One Tree at a Time
Tree Canada and Majesta are working together to launch the second edition of “Trees by the Shore” program. Last year 25 communities across the country were selected to plant trees by rivers, lakes and streams to beautify the area but also to strengthen the natural ecosystem.
Communities are invited to apply for the 2010 program. Tell us why your town or city deserves more trees by your shore and how you will engage local organizations and youth to take part in planting 1500 trees. Visit www.majesta.com to apply – applications are due by January 15th, 2010.

How Green is Your School?
We are pleased with the success of our Greening Canada’s School Grounds program with our partner FedEx Express. Ten schools were greened across the country – and students, parents and teachers all did their part (see photos below). There are lots of advantages to greening a school – more shade, sequestering carbon, and a fun place for kids to play. For 2010, nineteen schools are slated for greening, so get your applications here.
Show us how green your school can be.

Building Partnerships in Community Forestry
In November Bruno Chicoine, Tree Canada’s Project Manager, attended the Partners in Community Forestry National Conference in Portland, Oregon. The annual conference brings community groups, associations, forestry experts, municipality workers and health advocates from across Canada and the U.S. to discuss methods to create sustainable, livable cities with an emphasis on strong, urban forests. Workshops on tree development, using social media to promote urban forests and green infrastructure unfolded over three days.
“This conference has been extremely interesting and provided a great opportunity to gain knowledge about the latest practices and research projects in urban and community forestry across North America,” explained Bruno.

Helping B.C.’s Forests
In September, Tree Canada launched its B.C. Fire and Mountain Pine Beetle ReLeaf program in West Kelowna with its partners FedEx Express, TELUS and TREE Brewing. Tree Canada is helping residents, landowners and First Nations, who were affected by this summer’s raging wildfires or the onslaught of the Mountain Pine Beetle – they can purchase new trees that have been damaged.
Also B.C. brewery TREE Brewing has pledged a donation for every bottle sold of its Black Tree beer to help this program.
Do your part for B.C.’s forests – contact us
Or donate to our program here.

Treeing the World
Tree Canada contributed to the planting of 853,851 trees during for the United Nations Billion Tree Campaign. Launched in late 2006, the goal of this campaign was to motivate countries to plant 7 billion trees to mitigate the effects of climate change and deforestation. On September 21, 2009, this goal was reached thanks to the participation of China. A new goal is being set and Tree Canada will do its part to make Canada, and the world, a greener place to live. For more information on the program visit the Billion Tree Campaign here: http://www.unep.org/BILLIONTREECAMPAIGN/
