A first for Canada:
Steven Blaney, M.P., Goes CARBON NEUTRAL

M.P. Lévis-Bellchasse - Steven Blaney
Canada’s First Carbon Neutral M.P., Steven Blaney
Lévis, January 18, 2008 – Steven Blaney, federal Member of Parliament for Lévis—Bellechasse, is now offsetting his Lévis, Lac-Etchemin and Ottawa offices’ CO2 emissions by planting trees. Following an assessment by Tree Canada, Mr. Blaney’s office became the first MP’s office to receive this carbon neutral certification.

True to his election promise, Steven Blaney is working to make Lévis—Bellechasse a leader in the area of sustainable development. “Like our government, I am taking practical steps to offset greenhouse gas emissions, and encourage organizations and companies to pursue their efforts to reduce and offset their emissions,” he added.

Tree Canada is a not-for-profit, charitable organization established in 1992. Tree Canada is a leader in promoting the value of urban forests in Canada. “We create opportunities for individuals and groups with an interest in planting and caring for trees for non-commercial use. Our planting partners, who have planted over 75 million trees in ten years, are responsible for their ongoing care and maintenance. We support Mr. Blaney and offer our assistance to interested organizations and companies,” said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada.

According to Tree Canada’s CO2 Emissions Offset Calculator, the activities of Mr. Blaney’s offices generate 20 tonnes of CO2 annually. To offset these emissions, it is necessary to plant 166 trees, which will remove this CO2 from the air over an estimated period of 20 years.

The trees will be planted in the riding this spring, in collaboration with local organizations and Tree Canada. “This will be a unique way to celebrate the International Year of Planet Earth,” said Mr. Blaney. The trees will be planted in keeping with the afforestation practices defined in the Kyoto Protocol, as applicable to Quebec.
