Tree Canada hosts visit from Armenian foresters

April 4, 2008, Ottawa — Tree Canada is proud to welcome two Armenian foresters to Canada, as part of an extended tour to learn about Canadian forestry and conservation.

Ms. Alla Berberyan of the Youth Initiative Group “Building Sustainable Future in Regional Armenia” and Mr. Gagik Amiryan, Chief Forester of the Gugark Forestry Agency, a division of the Ministry of Agriculture, will arrive in Toronto on April 6th.

They will embark on a two-week tour of Ontario which will include visits to Algonquin and Haliburton forests; meeting with professors and students at the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Toronto; and visiting with Tree Canada and Trees Ontario to learn more about provincial and national tree planting efforts.

Their tour will serve as an educational experience to learn information and techniques about forestry conservation in Canada and how they can be applied in Armenia. It also provides a unique opportunity for our Canadian counterparts to learn more about forestry in Armenia and the challenges experts there face in combating deforestation.

The project “Building International Bridges for Forest Futures” is funded in part by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Adrina Bardekjian Ambrosii, Project Manager and Tree Canada Associate, said these visits speak to Tree Canada’s commitment to promoting forestry at home and abroad:

“This project has been a wonderful opportunity for building international relationships and sharing knowledge. The only way we can sustain our forests is through global collaborative efforts.”

Tree Canada is a national charitable organization working in partnership with business, public agencies, institutions, First Nations and a variety of non-government organizations at the provincial and local level to plant and care for trees.
