TD Bank Financial Group plants trees across Canada
to thank customers
Donation of 160,000 trees will be planted to replace areas of
devastated forest
Toronto, Ontario, June 2, 2006 — TD Bank Financial Group announced today that as part of its annual Customer Appreciation Day, it is partnering with Tree Canada to plant 160,000 trees in select locations throughout the country, including Kelowna, B.C., Sudbury, Ontario, Gatineau, Quebec, and Halifax, N.S.
"At TD we value our customers and we wanted to thank them for their business in a way that would give back to local communities," said Tim Hockey, Co-Chair, TD Canada Trust. "With branches in hundreds of communities across the country, TD is very much a part of the Canadian landscape, which is why we're thrilled to help beautify and restore it. This donation also ties into the many community environmental projects that are funded through TD Friends of the Environment Foundation."
The environmental impact of 160,000 trees is significant. Over their lifetime, these trees will absorb 93,418 tonnes of carbon dioxide and will filter other pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone. Each mature tree will lift nearly 400 litres of water out of the ground and discharge it into the air daily, cooling the air while producing life-giving oxygen. Trees reduce water run-off and erosion, keep streams cleaner, recharge ground water, and provide habitat for wildlife.
"Our wilderness is a big part of what defines us as Canadians. It's something we all have in common no matter where we live. And since so many TD Waterhouse clients are investing for the future, we thought we'd thank them with a gift that everyone could appreciate and that also represents an investment for the future," added Bill Hatanaka, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, TD Waterhouse.
TD worked with Tree Canada to identify planting sites across Canada, focusing on communities that have lost large stands of trees to natural disasters that require reforestation to improve their environment including wildlife habitat. Plantings will take place in Kelowna, British Columbia, where large areas of forest have been destroyed by fire; Sudbury, Ontario, which is restoring forests adjacent to mining sites; Gatineau, Quebec, where a large municipal program is underway to re-green the city; and the Halifax area, Nova Scotia, where many trees have been destroyed in recent years by ice storms and hurricanes.
"This very large cross-Canada tree planting effort adds to TD's reputation as a corporate environmental leader," said Jeff Monty, President, Tree Canada. "Together with TD, we're striving to "Grow Clean Air," making our communities greener while creating a living legacy for generations to come."
In addition to the donation of trees, TD Canada Trust and TD Waterhouse are holding local Customer Appreciation Day celebrations in branches across Canada today.
