New Faces at Tree Canada

(Ottawa, ON – October 1, 2008) Tree Canada is proud to welcome four new Board members, a new Chair and Vice-Chair to its organization. Gary Bull, Bill Vander Zalm, Jean Boudreault and Roger St. Louis were recently inducted into the organization’s Board of Directors at Tree Canada’s Annual General Meeting, while Dorothy Dobbie and Timo Makinen became the new Chair and Vice-Chair.

“The collective experience, expertise and enthusiasm of these individuals are a great benefit to our organization,” said Michael Rosen, President of Tree Canada. “Our staff is looking forward to working with them to advance our main cause – making Canada a greener place to live.”

Gary Bull
Gary Bull is an Associate Professor working in the Department of Forest Resources Management at the University of British Columbia and one of Canada’s leading forest-carbon experts. He spent most of his early career working in a consultative capacity with forest products companies, resource based communities, various government agencies and environmental non-governmental organizations.

Bill Vander Zalm
Bill Vander Zalm was Premier of British Columbia from 1986 – 1991. He served as the mayor for the City of Surrey (1969 – 1975) before moving into provincial politics as the Minister of Municipal Affairs (1978 – 1981) and the Minister of Education (1981 –1983). Bill Vander Zalm is a self described “nature lover” and operates his own nursery “Van’s Inc.” specializing in lilacs in Ladner, B.C.

Jean Boudreault
Jean Boudreault currently is Vice-President of Environment Branch for Genivar (a global engineering company). He has been working in environmental consulting for 25 years. As a professional, he has undertaken numerous Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies related to the construction/restoration of roads, energy transmission lines and small or large hydroelectric powerhouses. He lives in Montreal.

Roger St. Louis
Roger St. Louis is the Regional Manager for TD Canada Trust Friends of the Environment Foundation. He has held several prominent positions throughout his career in banking and finance including Canada Trust, Branch Manager in Mississauga and Senior Account Manager for Royal Bank. Roger is an active volunteer in his community. He served as the past President of the Ontario Forestry Association and was a former board member for the Association.

Dorothy Dobbie (Chair)
Dorothy was the M.P. for Winnipeg South from 1988 – 1993 serving as Parliamentary Secretary in a number of portfolios. She was the Co-Chair of the Joint Parliamentary Committee of the House and Senate on the Renewal of Canada, out of which evolved the Charlottetown Accord. She is the former Executive Vice-President of Naylor Communications Inc. and was the first woman elected President of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. Currently she is the President and founder of Pegasus Publications Inc., the publisher of Manitoba Gardener, Ontario Gardener, Alberta Gardener, SMART Connections and a number of magazines, journals and directories. She broadcasts a weekly gardening show on the Winnipeg radio station, CJOB.

Timo Makinen (Vice Chair)
Timo is the manager of Shell Canada Oil Sands' GHG offset portfolio and is also involved with GHG management strategies. Prior to joining Shell in 2005, he held positions with Vizon SciTech Inc., B.C. Gas Utility Ltd., and BC Hydro. He is a registered professional engineer in the provinces of Alberta and B.C., a director of the Canadian Institute of Energy (BC), and a member of the BC Sustainable Energy Association. Timo graduated from the University of Toronto with a BASc (Hons.) in Chemical Engineering and an MBA and Masters of Natural Resources Management from Simon Fraser University. He has co-authored numerous papers and frequently presented on issues related to energy and environment linkages and sustainable development.

Three new staff members have also joined Tree Canada’s head office in Ottawa: Melissa Nisbett, Communications & Marketing Officer; Jim McCready, Program Forester and Janet Lockyear, Administrative Assistant.
