A Tree Planting Leader - Tree Canada Announces Its First Carbon Protocol

(Nanaimo, B.C. - September 23, 2009) Tree Canada has released its first Forest & Urban Tree Carbon Project Protocol, a comprehensive document that describes how Tree Canada will account for the greenhouse gas offset value of the trees it plants.

Tree Canada, Canada's largest national tree organization, has planted over 76 million trees, many of them to offset CO2 and other greenhouses gases. The Protocol was developed because individuals, companies and organizations are interested in using trees as a way to offset their CO2emissions. Trees are approximately 50% carbon, all of which comes from the atmosphere where greenhouse gases including CO2 are contributing to global warming.

"We are extremely proud of this document because it demonstrates to Canadians that trees are a viable and reliable way to offset greenhouse gas emissions" said Dorothy Dobbie, Chair of Tree Canada. "We wish to thank our Associates, Board members and external experts who carried out such a thorough review of this document so that trees can be as part of Canadians' personal climate change action plans," she said.
